About the Magazine

Moorish Tides was created to showcase the writing of University of New England students. The idea for the magazine grew out of two creative writing classes I began teaching in the fall of 2016. As I told my students, the city of Tangier was their classroom, and their writing should be about their experiences and encounters during their semester here. I was so proud of the students’ work that I first considered a blog to publish their papers. But Neal Jandreau, our director of creative strategies in global affairs, proposed a professional magazine to do justice to the thoughtful and deeply moving essays I was reading.

Moorish Tides is open not only to UNE students and faculty but to anyone who can enchant and enlighten us with tales and stories that help us enlarge the scope of our knowledge and tighten the bonds of our friendships.
